Grant Program.
We are thrilled to introduce the Higher Ground Abodes Grant Program, aimed at bolstering affordable living through cooperative housing for low-income Detroiters.
Higher Ground Abodes Grant.
Introduction:
This initiative seeks to help individuals and groups establish, expand, or enhance their living arrangements. The awards are a testament to our dedication to assisting individuals grappling with housing challenges due to limited incomes.
The Higher Ground Abodes Grant provides money and other support to people who live in, or want to live in, a cooperative or shared housing arrangement that is based on democratic values. By offering this assistance, we hope to see individuals get the aid needed to move out of poverty.
Criteria for Eligibility:
Who Can Apply - Applicants must be Detroit residents, live at 30% or below the area median income, and be looking for help with shared or cooperative housing.
Application and Selection Process:
How Does One Apply? - To apply, you need to fill out a form that explains your living situation, housing needs, financial status, and how you plan to use the support.
How Are Awards Decided? - Awards are given to qualifying applicants based on the availability of funds.
How is One Notified? - Selected applicants will be notified by email or phone with details on how to receive the funds and next steps.
When Are Funds Available?
Awards are given out on a rolling basis until the dedicated funds for this program are exhausted.
How Can Funds Be Used?
Funds can be used to meet a variety of needs. Some examples include paying membership fees to join a cooperative, making a down payment on a cooperative unit, funding to buy a home that several individuals will share, or paying back monthly or carrying charges. Let us know what you need is, and we can let you know if we can help.
What Must I Do If Awarded?
If awarded, recipients will be contacted by Higher Ground Abodes within a few months of receiving the support. Our only ask is that you take the time to update us on your situation.

“Higher Ground Abodes provides us with mentorship and guidance. They help us set up our structure, find collaborators and partners. Behind the scenes, they’re holding our hands, providing support. They also find people to donate things we need, like furniture.”

“The HGA model addresses many issues with our housing system…
while placing people on track to homeownership.”
