Higher Ground Abodes is a nonprofit organization. We support people who are extremely low income with housing through shared living, education, and advocacy. October 2024, we purchased our first home debt free. by June 2025, we want to renovate the property in the same manner - without debt! Once done, we will rent the home to 4 to 5 young adults who are transitioning out of foster care.
Through our fundraising campaign - “The Village Home Project” - we are seeking dollars, deeds, and goods to make the house we purchased into a beautiful home as follows:
Phase I (Now - June 13, 2025): Essential Repairs – We’ll make the home safe and up to code by fixing major issues like demolition, wiring, plumbing, and any lead or asbestos concerns. Do you have related skills? Sign up now.
Phase II (June 23 - June 27, 2025): Making It a Home – Next, we’ll add improvements for comfort and function, like energy-efficient upgrades, better storage, and shared living spaces.
Phase III (Fall 2025): Daily Living & Upkeep – Once move-in ready, residents will co-manage the home, handling maintenance, budgeting, and daily responsibilities.
In phase I & II, we are seeking volunteers with varying skill levels. Specifically, we are in need of volunteers to do:
Replace plumbing
Update electrical
Demolish and clean out home
Connect bathroom plumbing
Install electrical switches, outlets, and plates
Install windows
Repair brickwork and stairs
Install vinyl flooringInput cabinets
Prime and paint
Check boiler operations
Straighten and secure stairs
Repair plaster
Replace knobs and hinges
Repair railing height
Add backsplash
Install additional fiberglass insulation
Install ceramic and vinyl tile flooring
Install vanities and mirrors
Install organizers in closets
Install cabinets, countertops
Demolition & Clean out
Install Fire Extinguisher
Cap below-grade drains
Worksite cleanup, including dusting and deep cleaning
Grade soil
Fertilize yard
Clean leaves
Cut Down Weed Trees
